Sapphires are the perfect choice of precious gemstone when designing your own engagement ring. Whether you’re drawn to a timeless and traditional style or something more colourful and contemporary, sapphires offer endless possibilities.
When you think of engagement rings, diamonds often come to mind first – but sapphires are increasingly becoming a popular choice, and for good reason! Sapphire engagement rings are durable, come in an array of colours, and can be a more budget-friendly choice when choosing a centre stone for a ring.
In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to our favourite things about the vibrant and timeless classic that is the Sapphire.
Although the most iconic and common colour for sapphires is royal blue, they can be found in all colours of the rainbow! You can find pale baby pink sapphires, vivid orange sapphires, deep mossy green sapphires, stunning black sapphires, and even colour-changing sapphires! Blue sapphire engagement rings remain the most popular choice, but more and more people are opting for more creative colours when designing their dream engagement ring.
Colour-changing sapphires change colour in different light and parti sapphires have two distinct colours running through the stone. These are perfect choices if you’re looking for an engagement ring that is truly one-of-a-kind. At India Mee Jewellery we are BIG fans of a parti sapphire (also known as bi-colour sapphires). We can’t help but be drawn to the two tone element of these sapphires.

Different colours have different symbolic meanings; with a sapphire ring, you can design a ring that holds its own unique message. You could choose colours that start with your and your loved one’s initials, or colours that symbolise your individual personalities.
Because sapphires come in a wide range of colours, you have the freedom to choose a metal that perfectly enhances both the gemstone and your complexion. Cool skin tones with blue or pink undertones look stunning paired with white gold or platinum, while warm skin tones with yellow or olive undertones glow beautifully beside yellow or rose gold. With a sapphire, you can create an engagement ring that feels truly personal and perfectly suited to you.
For an engagement ring, durability is extremely important. Sapphires make an excellent choice as the centre stone for an engagement ring due to their durability and hardness. Sapphire is one of the most durable gemstones available, ranking 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below a diamond which scores a 10.
Due to its hardness, sapphires can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life and remain sparkling! Sapphires are highly resistant to scratches, heat, light, and common household chemicals. Because they are so resilient, sapphires are a perfect choice to create an heirloom piece of jewellery that you can enjoy wearing everyday, and pass down for generations.
*This being said, as a precious gemstone being worn in jewellery, care should always been taken. There will be times when taking your ring off is necessary to protect the piece. Read more about how to care for your jewellery here.
When sourced responsibly from trusted suppliers, sapphires can offer an ethical edge when choosing stones for an engagement ring. There’s greater scope for transparency, because sapphires are often mined in smaller, more traceable operations.
India Mee is passionate about creating beautiful made, ethical jewellery. We only source our diamonds and gemstones from trusted suppliers, and always prioritise the most ethical option. Read more in depth details about our sourcing and ethics here.
Sapphires represent faithfulness, sincerity, wisdom, and loyalty – the perfect combination to capture your everlasting love and commitment!
Spanning centuries and cultures, sapphires are seen as a symbol of truth and trust. We feel like this beautifully aligns with the promises made when marrying your person.
Sapphires are also the birthstone for September. If September is a special month for you then including them in your bespoke design could add even more sentimentality to the piece.
Because sapphires come in many colours and shapes, they lend themselves to more creative and unique ring designs. We love creating unusual and personalised jewellery, which is why we specialise in bespoke pieces.
Classic or contemporary, a sapphire can adapt to almost any design and any mix of precious metals, so you can really cater your bespoke sapphire engagement ring to suit your style. Whether you prefer a halo ring (a centre stone surrounded by a halo of smaller gems), a three-stone trilogy design, or something completely unique – your sapphire ring can be entirely your own design, to suit your own personal style.
Sapphires are the perfect blend of beauty and practicality. Almost as hard as a diamond, but they often offer more colour, character, and size choices for your budget. Choosing a sapphire means that you can have a truly striking centre stone without having to compromise on the size and sparkle.
We love exploring the incredible range of vibrant hues and carat sizes in our designs, and their durability means that you are investing in quality and craftsmanship – a timeless piece designed to last a lifetime.
Because they are hard-wearing and resistant to your average household cleaning chemical, it is perfectly safe to clean your sapphire engagement ring with warm, soapy water. For a deeper clean, you can take your ring to be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath or with a steam cleaner. *If we have made your bespoke sapphire ring, we are always more than happy to give it a clean in our Ultrasonic for you.

Because it is easy to clean and maintain at home, sapphires are an excellent low- maintenance choice of precious gemstone to feature in your engagement ring. Porous gemstones such as opal, pearl, amber or turquoise can be higher-maintenance gemstones since they are absorbent, vulnerable to damage, and require specialised care, which is why we don’t recommend them in an engagement ring.

FUN FACT: Did you know that a Ruby is the same gemstone as a Sapphire?! They are the mineral Corundum, but as the colour gets to a deeper, pinky red, it is called a Ruby!
